From Shadow Play (Light & Dust, 1992) Page 43 Journal Entry, West of Reno Not such a bad day. Won seventeen twenty in the slots. Received hard cash for old Gurdjieff books. Offered blue flames to a smiling virgin. Bought gooseberries in a Paiute smoke shop. Pressed Johnny Jump Ups into new notebook. Decorated stone with ribbons for meditative shadow flutter. Raised kitchen window to sound of silence between bird calls. Read about swallowtails and genebanks. Discovered it's not just the tip, but the whole fingernail that grows.

And now, as one last affliction, the Voice is ordering me to settle in this city and live among its people.  The Radiance of a Woman in Milwaukee Those who'd been staying were well on their way, what had to be done was done, things were in order as best they could be, and now that she was by herself, the city this city she grew up in, this city where she lived stretched out about her like someplace new which she could explore just as she wished. And, this morning, she chose to get up early and watch the sun rise over Lake Michigan as she'd wanted to do for so many years, yet never had managed to be there to see it, and away she went then all on her own.

It will not do, then, simply to feel disgust. Everyone is prone to forgetfulness, even under the most favorable conditions, and in a place like this, with so much actually disappearing from the physical world, you can imagine how many things are forgotten all the time. In the end, the problem is not so much that people forget, but that they do not always forget the same thing. What still exists as a memory for one person can be irretrievably lost for another, and this creates difficulties, insuperable barriers against understanding.
