There has been some success at boosting non-traditional exports, such as seaweed. The latter was as important in value terms as cloves in 1996, which was a poor year for cloves and a good year for seaweed. Diversification out of cloves remains an important policy objective. Zanzibar’s island nature boosts the already import role of fishery exports in its diversification drive. High value fishery exports to developed countries have a bright demand future, but one perhaps best served by highly skilled private sector ventures in association with experienced market agents.
